  • Firstly, I chose Dr. Chapala because his office is very close to where I live and because he takes my insurance. I had never been to see Dr. Chapala before, and I didn’t know what to expect. However, everything went very well. After the dental tech took my X-Rays, Dr. Chapala explained to me what they meant and then explained what he was going to do to treat it. It was also nice because he gave me a free deep cleaning. I did have a problems with my fillings, as they were too high and needed adjustment, so I called his office the day after and they were able to see me and adjust my fillings (for free) the next day (today, actually). So, all in all I my experience with Dr. Chapala has been very good so far

  • I had as close to a pain free experience as possible with Dr. Chapala DDS. His bedside manor was excellent. All in all it was a good experience. However, he seemed very rushed and did not explain as much as he could about my treatment plan until I asked. After his work he did not show me what he had done or even rinse my mouth. He may have been stretched thin. I am sure with more time, he could be the very best, as he nearly is.

Do I have to live with tooth sensitivity?

Do your teeth ache when you eat and drink cold or hot foods? Is enjoying a spoonful of ice cream or drinking hot coffee painful? These symptoms commonly coincide with tooth sensitivity – a dental condition that makes teeth more sensitive to extreme temperatures of food and beverages. Some folks encounter discomfort when brushing or flossing their teeth. The severity of tooth sensitivity can vary from dull, nagging discomfort to a sharp pain. Some patients may experience sensitivity more frequently than others. Like symptoms, the causes of sensitivity can vary, too. Fortunately, members of our community do not have to suffer with discomfort. Our dentist offers treatment for discomfort associated with sensitive teeth.

What causes sensitive teeth?

Many things can cause tooth sensitivity. Sometimes people develop sensitivity if they eat or drink acidic foods since acid breaks down tooth enamel, a protective coating around teeth. Brushing too vigorously can make teeth sensitive as well. In many cases, sensitivity coincides with gum disease—especially if the gums have receded and left the tooth’s roots exposed to bacteria and debris. Other cases of sensitivity are related to decayed or damaged teeth.

How is tooth sensitivity treated?

The way our team treats tooth sensitivity will depend on the underlying cause of the problem. For example, if gum disease and a receding gum line cause a patient’s sensitivity, treatment may involve a deep cleaning that removes infected gum tissue. Other patients may benefit from restorations such as a crown or endodontic therapy to repair a broken or badly diseased tooth. Sometimes, applying a sealant is the best course of action for someone who does not have signs of decay or gum disease.

There are steps patients can take to prevent tooth sensitivity such as avoiding brushing too vigorously and using toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth.

If you suffer with sensitive teeth, we invite you to visit our practice for a checkup where we can determine the cause of your discomfort. To schedule an examination or cleaning, contact the office of Dr. Hema K. Chapala at your convenience.

Eliminate Tough Dental Stains with Teeth Whitening

teeth whitening DesotoHave you used whitening strips and whitening toothpaste to lighten your teeth? Were you unsatisfied with the results? If so, you likely have deep permanent tooth stains. Over time, with age and exposure to dark foods and drinks, teeth will become dull, yellowed, and stained. Fortunately, there is a simple remedy for brightening a smile. Our dentist offers in-office and take-home teeth whitening solutions to help you reclaim a white, vibrant smile.

Why Store Bought Products Disappoint Patients

Many of our patients inform us that they are disappointed with whitening products purchased at drug and grocery stores. The reason these products are not effective at removing deep, permanent stains is the fact that they only contain mild bleaching ingredients. In fact, most store-bought products only whiten teeth one to two shades by removing surface stains. These products lack the chemical strength to whiten teeth below the enamel surface.

How Professional Teeth Whitening Transforms a Smile

Unlike over the counter products, our practice utilizes clinical strength ingredients and technology to lighten teeth. We offer two convenient options for our patients: in-office teeth whitening with the Zoom! system and take-home whitening systems that come with custom trays and prescription whitening gel.

Zoom! in-office whitening involves coating the outer surfaces of teeth with a potent whitening gel and using a laser light to deepen the whitening process. With the help of the laser, one 45-minute whitening treatment can brighten a smile up to eight shades.

For patients who prefer to whiten their teeth at home, we offer a professional bleaching system that comes with comfortable trays and prescription strength whitening gel. This allows patients to whiten their smiles as they clean house, run errands, or watch television. Patients will apply the gel to the trays and wear the trays for about an hour each day. In ten to twelve days, patients will achieve a much whiter smile.

Are You Prepared for a Dental Emergency?

emergency dentist DesotoAccidents and emergencies can occur at any time. Just like other unplanned circumstances in life, preparedness is essential to handling stressful situations quickly and properly. Our emergency dentist and staff can assist with a number of pressing oral health issues including toothaches, cracked or fractured teeth, abscesses, and facial trauma. Following are some helpful tips for responding to an urgent situation.

Steps to Take During an Oral Health Emergency

The first step toward preparing for a dental emergency is to keep our contact information easily accessible so that you can call our office even if you are not at home. We recommend adding our office number to your mobile phone’s contact list along with placing our business card in your wallet, vehicle, or place of work. This will ensure that you can call our team if an urgent situation arises. [pullquote]The first step toward preparing for a dental emergency is to keep our contact information easily accessible…[/pullquote]

When an emergency arises, it is important that you call us as quickly as you can. This will help us create room in our schedule to see you. We strive to provide same-day appointments for emergencies. When you call, let us know the nature of your situation, how the accident or emergency occurred, and the types of symptoms you’re experiencing.

If you have suffered facial trauma that has resulted in a broken or cracked tooth, do your best not to touch or move the tooth. If the tooth is completely dislodged from its socket, place it in milk or a Save-A-Tooth kit and bring the tooth to our office within an hour for the greatest chance of re-implantation.

When you arrive at our office, let our team know if you are experiencing any discomfort or facial swelling. When treating emergencies, we may use pain or sedative medication to ensure that you are comfortable and at ease. In the event that prescription medication is used, you will need to arrange for a ride to and from our office.

Preventive Dentistry: Your First Line of Defense for a Healthy Smile

dentist DesotoEnjoying healthy teeth and gums starts with preventive dentistry. With regular cleanings and routine checkups with a dentist, patients can prevent a host of oral health problems that can affect overall wellbeing and the mouth. Our dental team offers comprehensive dental care and preventive treatments to protect our patients’ smiles for years to come.

Checkups and Cleanings

Patients should come to our office twice a year for professional cleanings and dental exams. During checkups, our team will take X-rays to look at structures not visible to the trained eye along with performing a visual examination of teeth and gums. Checkups can reveal signs of tooth enamel loss, gum disease, dental caries, and oral cancer. By committing to regular examinations, the likelihood of detecting potential issues early on is much higher thus allowing for more conservative and cost effective treatment.

Receiving professional cleanings is also essential to enjoying optimal oral health. While homecare with brushing and flossing is very important, professional cleanings at our practice provide a deeper clean that is simply unattainable with brushing and flossing alone. Our hygienists use special tools to remove destructive substances like tartar and plaque buildup. We will also polish teeth for an ultimate clean feeling.

Preventive Services

In addition to cleanings and checkups, our team offers preventive services such as fluoride treatments and sealants. Fluoride is a mineral that is known to strengthen tooth enamel. Weak tooth enamel is susceptible to bacteria that cause cavities. By strengthening tooth enamel with fluoride treatments, we can reduce a patient’s risk for tooth decay. Applying sealants is another great preventive treatment that helps protect teeth from disease. A sealant is painted on the teeth in liquid form and cured with light. Most commonly placed along molars, sealants fill in the grooves and pits of teeth so that keeping debris and plaque off the back teeth is much easier for our patients.
