(Also, remember to avoid poor dental habits, like chewing ice!).
What If My Veneers Come Off?
If one of your veneers comes off, it is important to remain calm. Priority number one is contacting our office so we can repair your smile as soon as possible. In the meantime, keep the veneer in a safe, clean place until your appointment. Under no circumstances should you use any household items, like crazy glue, to attempt to remedy the situation. If you experience sensitivity, then do your best to stay away from hot and cold foods and drinks until after your visit.
What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?
In order to make room for your veneers, we will have to shave off a tiny sliver of your natural enamel. Normally, we wouldn’t recommend doing this, since your enamel helps protect your teeth from harmful bacteria. However, your veneers will function as an effective shield, and your oral health won’t suffer because of your new cosmetics. In some cases, veneers actually help support enamel that has become weakened and reduce dental sensitivity!
Do Veneers Give You a Lisp?
Patients sometimes have trouble pronouncing certain sounds when they first get their veneers, but this effect should fade with time. Can You Whiten Veneers?
Unfortunately, teeth whitening doesn’t have the same effect on veneers as it does natural enamel.
Like many surfaces, your enamel has microscopic holes known as “pours.” The bleaching agents used in teeth whitening solutions are specifically formulated to fit through the pours in your enamel so they can reach and eliminate the stains trapped underneath. Since veneers are made from porcelain, they don’t have the same porosity. In fact, veneers generally take longer to stain than enamel!
That said, if your veneers do start to look yellowish and worn, we can restore their pearly shine with a good polish. If that doesn’t do the trick, we can replace them entirely so you can continue to enjoy the appearance of your smile.
