Your Future Self Will Thank You: What Can Happen If You Skip Your Dental Checkup

Many people view their upcoming dental appointment as a waste of time, because it can seem like a block where they can’t finish up any errands that might be piling up. If you share this viewpoint, then you may be tempted to cancel or postpone the visit. However, regular checkups and cleanings are important in preserving your oral health. Keep reading to learn why you shouldn’t miss getting the preventive care you need.

You Risk Developing Oral Health Issues

You may already know that brushing and flossing every day is an important part of taking care of your oral health. Your at-home routine allows you to remove any plaque or bacteria that can cause some problems. Even if you are diligent in following it, visiting your dentist is an important part of your dental routine.

There may be places in your smile that you cannot reach as easily, or you have hardened tartar that has built up. Going to your cleaning will allow these areas to get fully cleaned. Regular brushing and flossing cannot fully remove the problem, but your dentist has special tools that can effectively do so and keep your smile pristine.

Having a buildup of plaque is a problem because it can cause issues when left to its own devices. They can attack your teeth and gums, causing cavities or an infection. Your enamel may become weakened, or your gumline may start to recede. Both of these are often followed by sensitivity or even tooth loss when it’s not treated. You may think that sticking closer to your routine will fix it, but these types of conditions can’t go away without help from your dentist.

Oral Cancer May Not Be Caught Early

Additionally, oral cancer is something that can affect anyone. While some people are at a higher risk due to certain factors (such as lifestyle habits), it’s important to catch this life-threatening issue right away. Symptoms may be mild at first, to the point where you don’t notice them, but your dentist is trained to spot any signs and take action to treat them. The earlier it’s caught, the better chance you have of getting the successful treatment you deserve.

While you may have been tempted to skip your upcoming checkup and cleaning, remember the points above. It’s not a waste of time as you are taking care of yourself! View these appointments as a chance to ensure your smile can stay pain-free and avoid needing more treatments in the future.
