Can Gum Disease Run in the Family? What to Know

October 7, 2025

Three generations of a family out on a walk

When you have your yearly visit with your doctor, they likely ask about your family’s medical history. This helps them learn more about any conditions for which you may be at a higher risk of developing. But did you know that the same applies to your oral health? Gum disease is a dental problem that can be affected by your genetics. Keep reading to learn how and ways you can prevent it.

What is Gum Disease?

If you don’t know much about gum disease, then it’s a good idea to learn just a bit about it. In short, it’s an infection in the pink, soft tissues in your mouth. This happens when bacteria build up along your gumline and attack it when it’s not cleaned off. In the early stages, you may notice your gums are red, inflamed, or bleed when you brush or floss. As it progresses untreated, you may experience recession or even tooth loss.

How Is Gum Disease Genetic?

As researchers learn more about this condition, they found that genetics is a risk factor. In a study by the American Dental Association, certain patients have weaker immune system or connective tissue due to their family tree. They are more likely to develop inflamed gums and an infection. Not only that, but some people just have a stronger reaction to the bacteria in their mouth!

What Can I Do to Prevent Gum Disease?

That being said, it’s important to note that you can’t blame your gum disease on your parents alone! If you have poor oral hygiene or use tobacco products, then these may be the reasons behind it. So, even if it runs in your family, it’s important to do your part in preventing it. Here are some simple tips you can follow:

  • Brush and floss at least twice a day to remove harmful bacteria on and between your teeth.
  • Break bad habits, such as smoking or chewing tobacco.
  • Follow a balanced diet, that way you can support your body, mouth, and immune system to fight off any infection.
  • Keep up with consistent visits to your dentist! They are trained to watch for the signs of gum disease, so you can get the treatment you need.

Although you may be worried about developing this condition, you should follow the tips above. They can help you prevent it and keep your smile stronger for the long run.
